Homeowners would rather lose money than sell to their ex

by Emily Marek

Forty percent of homeowners wouldn’t go through with a home sale if they didn’t like the buyer — and nearly one-third would rather take a loss on their home sale than sell to their ex.

Furthermore, 13% of homeowners said they’d take their home off the market if they learned their ex was considering buying it.

These are just some of the concerns plaguing homeowners who are afraid to sell their homes, according to a study from Clever. The real estate data analysis company surveyed 1,000 homeowners and found that 88% had fears about selling, while about one in eight said nothing would make them feel confident about putting their home on the market.

Other fears included the stress of selling, extra costs (such as repairs and closings costs), not being able to afford a new home and not being able to sell for enough money.

Additionally, 85% of survey respondents said they feared they’d be pressured into accepting a lowball offer, while 71% had general financial concerns about selling. More than half of respondents also said they worried about having to move quickly after selling their home, while 46% were afraid their home would sit on the market too long.

It’s telling, however, that nearly half of respondents said they’re locked into sweetheart interest rates under 4%. So perhaps it’s not so much the idea of selling to an ex that stings — it’s the thought of taking on a rate in the high sixes.

It’s not all about the bottom line, though. In addition to those who said they’d rather accept a lower offer than sell to their ex, 53% of respondents said they’d do the same rather than sell to a very rude buyer; 35% would do so rather than sell to house flipper; and 27% would do so rather than sell to someone they disagree with politically. Essentially, many sellers don’t want to think about someone they dislike living in their home, and that’s a compelling reason to stay put.
