The average Realtor has 12 years of experience — and plans to stay in the industry for at least a few more

by Emily Marek

The typical Realtor has 12 years of industry experience, according to the National Association of REALTORS’® 2025 Member Profile report.

A year ago, the average Realtor had 10 years’ experience — which could mean fewer new agents have joined the field since NAR’s 2024 Member Profile, boosting this year’s numbers. It could also mean some less-experienced agents have chosen to leave NAR or leave the industry altogether.

However, among existing members, 74% said they’re “very certain” they’ll stay in the industry for at least two more years, demonstrating widespread confidence in the profession, NAR said.

“The real estate market will always have a consistent flow of new entrepreneurs,” said Chief Deputy Economist Jessica Lautz. “Despite the headwinds in the current market, the majority of agents who are Realtors plan on staying in real estate as active professionals.”

NAR’s report — which surveyed nearly 5,000 Realtor members — also found that the typical agent took on 10 transactions in 2024, the same as a year prior. The median sales volume was also unchanged year over year at $2.5 million.

When broken down by real estate experience, Realtors with two or less years handled a median of three transactions for a sales volume of $500,000; Realtors with three to five years handled eight transactions for $1.6 million; Realtors with six to 15 years handled 11 for $3.2 million; and Realtors with 16 or more years handled 10 for $2.6 million.

Demographically, 80% of NAR members were White, followed by 9% Hispanic/Latino and 6% Black/African-American. Females made up 63%. The median age was 57, up from 55 in 2023. Notably, the proportion of Realtors aged 65 and older increased 7% year over year to 29%.

The median Realtor spent 35 hours a week working and earned a gross income of $58,100, up from $55,800 a year prior, and brought home net income of $36,600 after taxes and business expenses.

Income was proportionally higher among Realtors with more experience: Those with 16 or more years of experience earned a median $51,900 after tax.

Fifty-five percent of Realtors worked with independent companies, while 38% worked with franchised companies. The median Realtor was with their firm for six years, with 28% sticking around for 12 or more years.

Nearly half of all Realtors were covered by their firm with liability insurance; however, only 4% received health insurance, paid vacation/sick days or pension/401(K); 3% received dental or vision insurance; and 2% received life or disability insurance. Instead, most Realtors relied on partners/spouses for these benefits or paid out-of-pocket.

Finally, 71% of Realtors said real estate was their only occupation — down from 72% in 2023.
