Former employee sues NAR, alleges discrimination by President Kenny Parcell

by Emily Mack

The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) has been named in a new lawsuit by Janelle Brevard, the organization’s former chief storyteller. Brevard alleges that she was harassed by now-President Kenny Parcell after ending their relationship, which she says resulted in her ultimate firing.

Although Parcell is named multiple times in the complaint, NAR is the only defendant in the suit, RealTrends reported. Brevard accuses NAR of both sexual and racial discrimination.

According to the report, Brevard said in her lawsuit she was harassed by Parcell after the end of a relationship between the pair. Then, after filing a complaint about Parcell, she said she was ousted from the organization.

Brevard began her role with the company in late 2019 and was terminated in September 2022. In July of that year, NAR also hired the external firm Polsinelli PC to investigate allegations that Parcell had created a sexually hostile work environment.

According to Law360’s report on Brevard’s lawsuit, three white female employees reported misconduct by Parcell to Polsinelli PC. Brevard, who is Black, also spoke about her experiences to Polsinelli PC and says she was the only employee fired thereafter.

Brevard is being represented by Anthony Hall of The Leach Firm PA. Their office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mantill Williams, NAR’s vice president of communications, shared a statement with Chicago Agent. “It is our practice to fully investigate all claims that are brought to our attention and take action, as warranted,” it read. “We reject the claims filed in this lawsuit and we will vigorously defend against them.”

Editor’s Note: On July 6, Brevard filed a motion to dismiss the suit with prejudice, meaning she cannot refile the same claim in that court. NAR later confirmed the update, stating that Brevard “voluntarily withdrew her lawsuit.”
